Western Cowboy Hat History and Information

Howdee from ol' Rex Beerbot! This site contains important information about cowboy hats. Hope ya enjoy my site!

Although today the Western cowboy hat is recognized as part of "cowboy" lore, its still worn for aesthetic value as a part of western style. Originally, in the early days, it used to be a felt hat worn by cattle herders and its wide brim protected cowboys from the sun and rain. The multi-purpose cowboy hat could be used to signal others, fan a campfire, swat a horse or pull water out of a stream. "Urban cowboys and cowgirls" in the 1980's used to wear straw and felt versions of this wide, rolled brim hat with a high creased crown.

There is a wide choice of styles from many manufacturers. The most famous are the Stetson cowboy Hats.

John Batterson Stetson was a New Jersey man, born into a hat making family but ultimately moved to the west. He developed a reputation for durable, quality hats with the Ten-Gallon hat in 1865.

Now there are many quality manufacturers of hats including Resistol, Bailey Cowboy Hats and others. The manufacturers produce many different types of western cowboy hats.
