Cowboy Hat Types

Cowboy hats are most commonly made of felt (beaver and/or rabbit fur), straw or wool. Their prices can range anywhere from $20 to $4000. For the most common type, the felt hat, cost is often determined by the content of beaver fur vs. the rabbit fur in the hat. Originally felt hats were intended for winter wear (protecting from moisture and cold) and straw for summer (protecting from heat and sun) which is logical. Now however, both are seen worn either time of year depending on where you are.

Straw Hats
Straw hats are made of straw, light and sun shielding and can be hand woven into artfully crafted narrow braids. They come in versatile modern shapes. Straw hats tend to have much shorter lifespans. They will usually last two or three seasons of wear. It also depends on the care of the hat. The better the straw and tighter the weave, the lighter the hat. Straws hats are generally cheaper than felts.

Felt Fur Cowboy Hats
Felt cowboy hats were designed to be used in the rain. Felt cowboy hats are matted with fur making it stronger and lighter than woven materials. The water resistant fur/felt helps the hat hold its shape and shed water. The finest fur felt is made with a blend of closely guarded secrets, and a percentage of pure Beaver Fur - rated with an "X" grading. Beaver, neutrea or muskrat are the best and most expensive fur felts. A good quality felt hat will last anywhere from 20 years to a lifetime because of the durability of beaver fur.

Leather/ Oilskin cowboy hats

Western inspiration meets sophisticated leather and oilskin in these stylish hats. They are tough, rugged and water repellent. They are treated with cotton canvas and oil/wax for weatherproofing and wide brims for sun protection. These are a treat for the outdoor enthusiast. This is a great choice for those wanting a strong, durable and stylish hat.

Wool felt cowboy hats
Wool felt are made of wool and tend not to hold their shape. Wool hats are usually for dry climates and generally not recommended for any situation where they might get wet.
